Cottage pie

  • 300g minced beef
  • 1 red onion, chopped really fine
  • 2 cloves of garlic, chopped really fine
  • 1 large really ripe tomato, chopped
  • salt
  • pepper
  • oil
  • 3 large potatoes
  • splash of milk
  • bit of butter

  • gently fry the chopped onions and garlic until golden brown
  • add the meat and fry until meat is browned
  • add the chopped tomato, season and cook for about 10 minutes, add a little water if necessary
  • meanwhile peel and cut potatoes, cook in salted water for about 18 minutes
  • strain, mash with the butter and a splash (or three) of milk until you get a lovely creamy texture
  • put the meat mixture into an ovenproof dish
  • cover with the mashed potato, use a fork to make swirly patterns, add a few small knobs of butter

  • put in the oven and cook until the potato goes golden brown (15 mins more or less)
  • serve with peas or broccoli
  • I like a splash of Lea & Perrins
